Organic fast food ready for prime time |
O’Natural’s, which claims to be the first organic fast-food restaurant, is going national and perhaps international.
Founded in 2002 in Falmouth, Maine and Portland, Oregon, by partners of the Stonyfield Farms organic dairy, O’Natural’s purports to be the first such fast-food restaurant in the US.
Corporate vice-president Jay Friedlander says the restaurant’s concept is surprisingly simple: "Provide people with food that’s 100 percent food."
He says the restaurant, which also has two branches in Massachusetts, has gotten more than 800 franchise requests since opening four years ago—from as far away as Turkey.
Friedlander also stated that sales have been steadily rising, up as much as 40 percent at some locations.
The chain serves sandwiches, salads, Asian noodles, soups, beverages, pizza, breakfast, and baked goods.
Opening an O’Natural’s franchise will cost about $1 million, which the company says is much less than opening a conventional fast-food restaurant.
