
A new study confirms that the Mediterranean Diet—centered on plenty of fish, fruits and vegetables, beans, olive oil, and nuts—can reduce the risk of heart disease.
In fact, the Mediterranean Diet appears to be even more effective in protecting against heart attacks and stroke than the standard Western low-fat diet.
The study found 800 people with diabetes or at least three of the five other high-risk factors for heart disease—a family history of early heart disease, high cholesterol, obesity, smoking, and high blood pressure.
Those who ate a Mediterranean diet for four years had significantly lower cholesterol and blood pressure, less inflammation of the blood vessels, and less chance of developing diabetes.
