
Mini-gyms are being tested in seven McDonald's restaurants to help youngsters exercise as they eat.
R Gyms, named for McDonald's mascot Ronald McDonald, are mini-gyms with stationary bicycles hooked to video games, obstacle courses and aerobics exercises. The new gyms are being considered to replace play areas.
Despite company claims that the mini-gyms are promoting health, critics warn that parents could be fooled into believing their kids can eat more since they're exercising. Experts say the number of calories a child is likely to burn is miniscule compared to what they can eat in just a small meal.
For example, it would take more than three hours of exercise for a child to burn off a 200-calorie milkshake.
