As a protest against the impending July 1 deadline requiring fast-food chains in NYC to list calories on menus and menu boards, Wendy's, White Castle and Quiznos restaurants pulled calorie counts from their Web sites and eateries.
The regulation applies to standardized menu items at chain restaurants.
The restaurants complained that there isn't enough room on their menu boards for the calorie information, and that it is readily available elsewhere.
Wendy's pulled fliers and posters with meal item calorie counts from its NY shops, while Quiznos and White Castle deactivated pages on their websites offering a range of nutritional data.
All three companies said the measures were temporary, and that they were investigating alternative solutions to satisfy the requirements and consumer needs.
The move to legislate nutritional information on menus is growing nationally. At least 19 cities and states have enacted menu-labeling laws, and the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) is spearheading a petition to get Congress to enact Menu Education and Labeling (MEAL) legislation.
