As a rule, be wary of 'quick and easy' weight-loss schemes. Fad dieting can actually do more harm than good when it comes to losing and maintaining your weight.
We want to keep you informed about a few popular lies, to better help you combat the hype:
#1: Forget Fast Food
Because fast-food venues are listening to consumers, and even listing the nutritional values of their products, you now have better information to choose to eat healthily. Some suggestions:
* Get a salad. * Choose grilled instead of fried or breaded chicken. * Put the sauce and dressings on the side or scrape off as much as possible.
#2: No Eating Between Meals
Having snacks between meals might actually help you eat less, and stave off the urge to overeat or binge later. In fact, dietitians often recommend that you eat five smaller meals a day.
Try eating nutritious foods — and make them the ones you don't usually have during mealtime. According to the Produce for Better Health Foundation, a majority of Americans use snacking as a way to incorporate fruits and vegetables into their diets.
#3: Every Carb Is Bad
Carbs are used as fuel during exercise to burn body fat, a good reason not to eliminate them from your diet. But avoid processed carbs, which are high in sugar and white flour. Instead, enjoy beans, whole grains, and fruits and vegetables. Most are low in calories, and provide nutrients and fiber — proven to reduce the risks of several diseases. And these foods, with high water and fiber content, will fill you up — making it easier to take off the pounds.
#4: I Can Eat and Exercise the Same Way Forever and Never Gain Weight
The fact is, your metabolism slows down as you age, and you often have to either eat less or exercise more to avoid gaining weight. So, keep your food and exercise plan flexible.
